Villagers are pressing for action on a "danger" road after five accidents in six months.

The latest, on Christmas Day, was the last straw for residents in Lew who are campaigning for a speed limit on the A4095 Witney to Bampton road as it passes through the village.

Don Rouse, of University Farm, Lew, said: "This is definitely an accident blackspot. I just hope nobody gets killed.

"Everyone who lives here is worried sick about it. We have had cars ending up in ditches, and one hitting a telegraph post and cutting off the village's telephones and electricity.

"This is a dangerous road and something needs to be done about it quickly."

On Christmas Day a car went out of control and careered into a hedge. The driver escaped unhurt.

The "blackspot" is on the approach from Witney as the road goes into a right-hand bend on a pronounced camber. The road is derestricted, with a legal limit of 60mph.

The village only has 26 houses, not all of them adjoining the main road, and did not qualify under the county's guidelines for new speed limits. But yesterday there was a promise of action from the county council.

Paul Wilson, road safety manager for north and west Oxfordshire, said: "We carried out a speed survey and the average speed through the village was 56-57mph.

"We now plan to do some low-cost measures, including improved signs and hatching on the road surface, to see if that has any effect.

"If it does, then we could well introduce a 50mph limit."

The work could be carried out in the next two to three weeks, depending on weather conditions, he added.
