A call has gone out to would-be electricians living in Oxfordshire aged between 18 and 21: "The construction industry needs you."
Between 2001 and 2005, contractors and builders in the south east of England must recruit 950 plant mechanics and fitters just to keep up with demand for these skills.
Now the National Construction Industry Training Board has responded to the industry shortage in the region by inviting young people to train as maintenance electricians.
The board is offering a three-year apprenticeship, leading to NVQ Level 2, as well as industry-recognised qualifications, at its National Construction College, near King's Lynn, in Norfolk.
Senior plant mechanics instructor Graeme Brierley said: "This course is far from the soft option.
"It will provide high quality vocational training and valuable hands-on experience for a good, long-term career as a plant electrician."
