As Oxfordshire's hunts swung into action for the new year, Liberal Democrat MP Evan Harris has proposed a "third way" over the hunting debate.

He declined to back calls to end the hunting of foxes with hounds completely but wants tough new regulations imposed.

The Oxford West and Abingdon MP said: "I would support a ban on cub hunting, the use of terriers to drive foxes out of earths and deer hunting.

"As the Government's own Burns Report said, these are clearly demonstrated to be cruel.

"They should be banned.

"However I would not support a total ban on the hunting of adult foxes with hounds.

"Most of the deaths that they suffer without hounds are prolonged, painful and miserable through disease, starvation or injury.

"The alternative methods of dealing with foxes where they are a pest -- shooting, trapping or poisoning -- have their own problems and are often equally prolonged and painful.

"I see no evidence that these are any better than death when chased by hounds.

"In addition, in a liberal world, we need clear evidence to ban a legitimate activity pursued by a minority.

"I do not think we have that."

Dr Harris, the Lib Dem health spokesman, said he had no strong views on hare coursing and would look into the issue.
