Big Brother celebrity Stuart Hoskins helped launch Oxford's new blood donor centre at the Town Hall -- but left without giving blood.
The former communications director, who lives in Murcott, near Bicester, yesterday said he had given blood before, but had not eaten and "would probably float away".
But Mr Hoskins added: "It's just like going to the dentist really, once you get over the initial fear, it's fine.
"My mother-in-law had breast cancer and had to have about three blood transfusions. If it wasn't for the blood service, she wouldn't be here today."
Oxford United footballer Joey Beauchamp was at the launch but declined to donate blood as he was injured and frightened of needles. Community officer Peter Rhoades-Brown did.
The National Blood Service used to hold monthly sessions at the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre, in St Ebbe's, but has relocated to attract passers-by. Call 01865 447939 for details.
