An elderly widow has spoken of her frustration and dismay after town councillors blocked access to her husband's grave at Wantage Cemetery.
Dorothy Alexander, 70, of Garston Lane, Wantage, who has difficulty walking, has visited her husband Peter's grave by car for nearly ten years, using a single track road through the cemetery near Garston Lane. She was able to carry grass clippers and cans of water in the car to keep the grave tidy.
But Mrs Alexander, who is waiting for a knee operation, now has to walk to the grave after a post was put up to stop cars being driven through the cemetery.
Wantage Town Council said the road block was needed as drivers had veered off the road and graves had been damaged.
Mrs Alexander was upset because no notice was given. She said: "I don't think I am the only one who has difficulty visiting their loved ones' last resting place.
"My father is buried at Banbury Cemetery and things are different there. You can drive everywhere and get very close to where you need to be. This has really annoyed me."
Town councillor Joyce Hutchinson said: "We appreciate the difficulty this lady is having. But the majority of people who took cars along there were going on to the verge. People were getting very upset when graves were damaged."
