Oxfordshire's first ever solar-powered school crossing lights proved a hit when they were switched on in Benson.
And most delighted to see them were ten-year-old Gerard Ryan and his mother, Gerry. Gerard was hit by a car just over a year ago as he went to the village school.
The accident prompted a campaign by his mother, the parish council, the Bensington Society and the school to make life safer for the youngsters.
Mrs Ryan said: "It's great to see them. I'm sure they will be a real asset."
Lollipop lady Sue Wilkinson said: "These lights will give motorists clear warnings and that could well save a life."
The new lights cost £4,500 to install, compared with £10,000 for traditional systems. County council cabinet member for highways, Cllr Roy Tudor Hughes, said: "If these lights are successful in Benson they could be used elsewhere in the county."
