Senior citizens in Oxford celebrated the start of 2002 with New Year parties at the Town Hall.
More than 550 people aged 70 and over enjoyed a free meal and entertainment at events yesterday and Wednesday.
The annual parties are organised by Oxford's Over-70s Committee. The committee organises tea dances once a fortnight throughout the year, and the proceeds help pay for the parties, which cost about £3,000.
Mo Tweney, secretary of the Over-70s Committee, said: "It is a good opportunity for people to meet old friends."
The first New Year parties were held in 1936.
