The management of a highly successful hi-tech company has undergone a change at the top following the retirement of two senior figures.
Geoff McMullen, chief executive of Chilton computer network firm UKERNA is stepping down as chief executive after a four-year stint, while director of special projects Ian Smith is leaving after 18 years with the company.
Dr Smith joined as part of a small team charged with the task of setting up the education and research network, JANET, which links universities, colleges and research council operations.
The system has developed and now connects more than 700 sites, including the majority of further education colleges in the UK. He said: "A series of successful upgrades has brought us to the point where we're able to deliver data at speeds equating to 290 dictionaries per second."
Both will retain their links with the firm. Mr McMullen has been appointed chairman while Dr Smith has already been asked to do some consultancy work.
Dr Robin Arak is the new chief executive.
