Motorists in Watlington Road, Benson, have been left baffled by new road signs.
The signs on each side of a recently installed chicane are exactly the same, telling drivers to give way.
It has led to a lot of head-scratching from drivers, but has helped cut traffic speeds in the road.
Oxfordshire County Councils' area traffic engineer, Arshad Khan, said the move was not a mistake. He said: "The scheme is designed to slow down traffic from both sides.
"We have footpaths on both sides of the very busy road. The intention is for traffic to slow down to give pedestrians a chance to cross safely.
"There is a problem in that some drivers are confused about priorities.
"But this is an experiment and we will be monitoring it closely to see if modifications have to be made.
"If necessary, new signs or road markings will be installed."
