A nightmare changed into a dream come true for Jenny Allinson when she married her junior doctor boyfriend Paul Fenton.
The nightmare was a five-year battle against two cancers, with eight major operations and drugs treatment. The dream was her recovery, qualification as a doctor, and marrying the man she loved.
Jenny, 26, the only daughter of Abingdon mayor David Allinson and his wife Hilary, said: "My wedding is beyond my wildest dreams. I was so seriously ill that I had fears of dying but I was determined to beat the disease. Now I am in remission."
Jenny's recovery is the result of top class treatment at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford -- "a fantastic place" -- and courage in the face of apparently insurmountable odds.
She was diagnosed with cancer of the colon on the day she was accepted as a medical student at University College, London. Determined to pursue her career, Jenny underwent operations during her holidays, rather than take a year off as suggested.
After two operations all appeared well, then scans revealed four tumours in her abdomen. They proved benign, then thyroid cancer was detected. Jenny underwent more debilitating operations and treatment but battled on with her demanding medical studies. Finally, last year she was given the all-clear from cancer -- and she also passed her exams and qualified as a doctor.
Jenny said: "It has been an exhausting five years but remarkably I have come through. Not only have I beaten the cancers but I am a qualified doctor and have married Paul.
"It is all down to an attitude of mind."
Paul, 24, is also a qualified doctor, having graduated from Guy's and St Thomas's Hospital in London. They met working on Nightline, a student version of the Samaritans.
He said: "Jenny has shown remarkable courage. Now we look forward to a long and happy future together."
Hilary Allinson said: "It is a miracle. To see our daughter at the altar was so moving after what she has gone through in the last five years."
The wedding was at the Trinity Methodist and United Reformed church in Conduit Road, Abingdon on Saturday, followed by a reception at the Abbey Hall for 150 guests.
The couple are on honeymoon in Mauritius. Next month Jenny starts work as a junior house officer in a London hospital and Paul begins his career as a medical house physician at St Thomas's Hospital in London.
