Oxford Hawks Under 14s suffered their first defeat in two years when they were beaten 2-0 by a talented Marlow side in the Mercian Home Counties League.
Marlow, last year's national runners-up, played superb hockey in a game of high quality to which the Oxford boys also made a full contribution.
Outstanding for Hawks were James Crisp in goal, David Hibbert in defence and Andrew Cole in midfield.
Despite this defeat, Hawks can expect to finish runners-up in the league and thus progress to the knock-out stage of the Mercian competition which covers eight counties.
However, Marlow must now be hot favourites to take the league title which Hawks carried off last season.
