Canon David MacInnes, rector of the Anglican Church of Oxford in St Aldate's, is retiring after 15 years.
He steps down from the pulpit for the last time on Sunday.
The Rev John Chorlton will take over temporarily until Rev Charlie Cleverly takes up the post in September.
Canon MacInnes, 69, who came to St Aldate's in 1987 after a period at Birmingham Cathedral, said: "Life in Oxford has been fun, stimulating and full of surprises. I have loved it. It has been stretching and exciting to work in a city like this."
He said he would take a few months' sabbatical to reflect on his future.
During his time in Oxford, Canon MacInnes co-ordinated a £2m renovation project at St Aldate's, which included below-floor heating and improved lighting. A vibrant 1,000-strong congregation enjoys the facilities every Sunday.
