Red Cross volunteers in Oxfordshire are aiming to cash in on the launch of the euro, by collecting people's unused marks, francs and lire.

The Abingdon-based charity is setting up special collection boxes around the county to take old coins and notes from all the EU countries which introduced the euro on January 1.

Senior fundraiser David Jones said: "It is estimated there are notes and coins worth millions of pounds. We, like other charities, want to get our hands on the money to help with our fundraising initiatives.

"We can get 86 per cent of the face value of the money. Charities have made special arrangements with the banks in the euro zone until the end of the year so there is time for people to let us have their old holiday money."
