Residents have begun planting trees in a new wood being created in their village -- on the site of a former sewage works.
The wood at Merton, near Bicester, is being jointly funded by Thames Water and the Forestry Commission.
Oxfordshire Woodland Project and Merton parish councillors designed the wood. It is hoped it will attract a variety of insects, butterflies and birds.
About 100 trees were planted. John Sexton, Thames Water's environment director, put in a rare black poplar.
Two more black poplars were planted by Grahame Handley, chief executive of Cherwell District Council, and Ron Leaver,former chairman, and Pat Beard, vice-chairman, of Merton Parish Council.
Mr Sexton said: "We hope the finished woodland will be very popular with residents."
