A man was abducted, beaten, slashed with a knife and his life threatened because he owed one of his attackers £150, a court heard.

Faisal Idris told Oxford Crown Court yesterday he was bundled into a car and driven to a first-floor flat in Shepherd's Hill, where he was held captive and attacked.

Mark Dawes, 24, is alleged to have blackmailed Mr Idris' sister Shabana Abassi and his brother-in-law Waqar Abassi by demanding money in exchange for his release.

Mr Idris told the court he used his sister's car without asking her to drive to Moorhen Walk, Greater Leys, on May 25 last year.

He got out the car and was immediately assaulted by Anthony Campbell, whom he had not expected to see.

Mr Idris, who owed Mr Campbell £150, was forced into a white Rover and taken to a flat where he was repeatedly beaten and threatened by two black men -- Mr Campbell and a second man who the prosecution alleges was Dawes.

Mr Idris said the two men spoke to his brother-in-law on two mobile phones and demanded money.

Dawes was said to have made threats by phone on two to five occasions.

Mr Idris said: "I was beaten up by him about three times.

The court heard Mr Campbell slashed him across the chest with a 6in or 7in knife.

The ordeal ended when the victim was taken to the retail park at Cowley to be exchanged for £800. Police, who had been monitoring the mobile phone conversations, were waiting.

Dawes, of no fixed address, who the jury was told was found not guilty of kidnapping during a previous trial, denies blackmail.

The trial continues.
