Benson Parish Council could lead a placard protest and block traffic at a controversial "pinch-point" in Watlington Road.

Concerns centre on the traffic calming point where motorists approaching from both directions get the same instruction -- to give way to oncoming traffic.

Cllr Pat Peers said: "That pinch-point is a death trap. We must get things changed before someone is killed there.

"Appeals to the county council have done no good - we have written, telephoned and e-mailed the county but without getting any response.

"When faced with a wall of silence like this there is only one thing left to do -- take direct action. The situation is dangerous."

Oxfordshire County Council's area traffic engineer, Arshad Khan, agreed he had received many complaints about the signs but said the signs were a safety measure, not a hazard.

He said the signs did their job by slowing vehicles in both directions, and gave pedestrians a chance to cross the road.

Mr Khan said the site is being monitored to gauge the reaction of motorists and the public and the signs must stay for a while yet.

But Cllr Peers said: "The pinch-point was meant to help motorists get safely out of Blackland Road and The Mere -- not to help pedestrians.

"Is the county council waiting for someone to get killed or seriously injured before anything is done? It is scandalous."
