Wisbech Tn 2, Banbury Utd 0
Banbury produced plenty of effort and commitment in Saturday's Dr Martens Eastern Division encounter at Wisbech but it went unrewarded.
The visitors had three chances in the first 20 minutes, with Matty Gooderick twice being denied after breaking through the home defence. Firstly, the impressive Paul Hill and then Lee Hyde, pulled off good tackles as the United striker was about to take on Ian Pledger in the Town goal.
Ben Milner also went close with a header which was just plucked out of the top corner by Pledger.
The best chance for Banbury during the first-half fell in the 28th minute when Gooderick crossed to Milner, but although he controlled the ball well, his effort was cleared.
Wisbech took the lead in the 40th minute. Simon Tricker did well to tip a Hill header on to the crossbar but the rebound fell to Tuncay Korkmaz, and he made no mistake.
Gooderick had the ball in the net in the 56th minute when Tricker sent a long ball out of defence, but he was ruled off side.
Banbury were again out of luck in the 75th minute when Pledger made a great save to deny substitute Matty Travers.
Wisbech snatched the all-important second goal in the 82nd minute. From a throw-in on the right, Andy Wallbridge headed the ball into his own net under pressure from Andy Furnell.
Banbury: Tricker, Wallbridge, Muckelberg (O'Neill 89), Sullivan, Simpson, Fuller (L Travers 83), Corbett, Redknap (M Travers 68), Milner, Gooderick, McKay.
Attendance: 286
