A teenager who stabbed a friend in the stomach after drinking heavily and snorting cocaine only intended to "scare him off", a court heard.
Gary Davies, 19, wounded Alexander Gardner with a flick knife on July 15 last year outside Davies's home in Axtell Close, Kidlington, after the pair had been to a pub in Eynsham and then to two parties with friends.
The prosecution claimed Davies lost control when Mr Gardner insisted on entering Davies's house with two girls whom Davies had invited to stay the night.
Witnesses told Oxford Crown Court Davies's face became contorted with anger and he then thrust the knife into Gardner's stomach.
Davies denies a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He told the jury on Friday that Mr Gardner began fighting so he took out the knife, which he used for fishing, to deter him.
He said: "Alex punched me, and said: 'Come on, a one-on-one fight.' But I didn't feel like having a fight.
"I think he threw some punches. I struggled away and he came at me again.
"I held out the knife to sort of say: 'Get away!' I thought the knife would scare him off."
Davies said he realised the knife had sprung open when he saw blood on Mr Gardner's T-shirt.
The trial continues.
