Councillor Les Sibley is calling for the allowance of Bicester's mayor to be increased.
He would like to see the subsidy brought in line with others in Oxfordshire -- even though the current mayor opposes the plan.
Cllr Lawrie Stratford, the current mayor, is given £1,000 at the beginning of his year-long term of office, but can claim expenses from the town's civic fund.
Cllr Sibley said that the two amounts should be combined and the mayor given a more realistic allowance.
He said: "If the mayor's allowance needs to be increased then let's do it. When we compare us with other town mayors in Oxfordshire, we are last."
Mr Stratford said he believes the current system is the most open.
