Oxford Harlequins were far from downhearted following their elimination from the Powergen Intermediate Cup on Saturday.
Hertford, unbeaten leaders of London North Division 2, were just too strong and triumphed 33-17 to reach the quarter-finals and keep alive their hopes of a Twickenham final.
That was never a realistic prospect for Quins, and so there were no recriminations afterwards - just an acceptance that they were not good enough on the day and a indication of where they need to make improvements.
"I'd like to play that standard of rugby every week," said Quins skipper Jamie Cope. "Against some teams we play, some of our moves break down becauseopposition players are dawdling back out of position.
"Hertford were most impressive in the clinical way they finished off their chances. That's something we must learn."
Quins, nevertheless, had their moments and certainly encouraged coach Matt Maudsley in the belief that they can live at a higher standard than Southern Counties North.
"Hertford told us we were the best side they had played this season, and that we could live comfortably at their level," said Maudsley.
"It was a very encouraging display and Hertford were particularly impressed with our attacking play.
"Our defence was caught out a couple of times, but that was because we were not used to that sort of competition in our league."
Quins' main concern now is that the injuries, suffered in the Hertford game, might effect their likely league title decider away to secind-placed Grove this Saturday.
Both props Paul DeLange and Jon Silversides had to come off injured, full back Guy Dobson aggravated a hamstring, while lock Rob Dow got himself sent off for his involvement in a scuffle.
These days, Quins have greater strength in depth, especially behind the scrum.
Two new overseas recruits - both teachers - have strengthened the backs.
Richard Rouse, who played in the centre for Sydney University against Oxford University in November, made his debut for Harlequins 2nd on Saturday.
The other newcomer is New Zealander Stuart Burrage, another schoolteacher, who has played full back for Wellington Under 18s.
