Banbury United 0, Tonbridge Angels 2

Banbury continued their depressing run in Dr Martens Eastern Division when Tonbridge completed the double over them in just four weeks, condemning United to their sixth game without a win.

The wet weather meant that this was one of only six games played in the whole of the Dr Martens programme, and the Banbury ground staff deserve great credit for the condition of the playing surface, which to be fair, played remarkably well in the circumstances.

Banbury dominated much of the first-half without carving out any clear-cut chances, with Angels' defence marshalling Ben Milner and Matty Gooderick well.

Simon Tricker did well in the 28th minute when he saved a Mark Greatorex effort at the second attempt. Shortly afterwards he sent a long ball forward for Gooderick but with just Angels keeper Chris Conneally to beat, he failed to control the ball.

Banbury's best chance came in the 35th minute when Jimmy Simpson was brought down, well inside the penalty area, but referee turned the appeal down.

In the 42nd minute, against the run of play, Tonbridge took the lead through Steffan Ball.

After the break, Gooderick beat the offside trap with a great run, but he shot powerfully straight at Conneally, who saved it at the second attempt.

Tonbridge looked a far better side in the second-half though, and increased their lead in the 50th minute when Brendon Cass headed home.

The visitors then closed things up at the back, and although Banbury never let their heads drop, they failed to breach a resolute Tonbridge defence. And the introduction of George Redknap, a quarter of an hour before the end, also made little difference to the final outcome.
