Witney lost any remaining chance of promotion when they succumbed to a surprise 10-6 defeat at Buckingham.
With the home pitches under water after heavy rain, the match was played in the impressive surroundings of Stowe School.
But Witney's display did not match the backdrop as they failed to turn plentiful possession into points.
Buckingham, playing with the wind behind them in the first half, led 10-3 at the break, with a penalty goal and a converted try, following a mix-up in the Witney defence.
Witney replied with a penalty by Francis Grant after a great break by centre Mike Dunbar.
With the elements in their favour in the second half, Witney began to gain control and Grant kicked a second penalty.
In the closing moments, Witney were camped in the Buckingham 22, but they lacked the creative cutting edge to get the all-important score.
Oxford produced one of their better displays of the season, but still went down 34-5 at home to High Wycombe.
Despite the muddy conditions, both sides gave their three-quarters plenty of work.
Wycombe scored after just two minutes with a breakaway try and added another ten minutes later.
Oxford, who had two tries ruled out, finally scored in the second half when fly-half Dave Engwell broke through the Wycombe defence and centre Dave Ralson ploughed over from three yards.
However, the home side failed to capitalise on their substantial possession and Wycombe, who had beaten Oxford 40-12 in October, pulled clear with two tries in the last ten minutes.
The eagerly awaited top-of the-table clash between Grove and Oxford Harlequins was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
