Oxford Cheetahs speedway promoter Vanessa Purchase is confident of retaining the Elite League title after re-signing Brian 'The Axeman' Andersen.

The dashing Dane, beset with shoulder injury problems for most of his career - one shoulder is permanently broken - is nonetheless a past world under 21 champion and British Grand Prix winner at the old Odsal Stadium.

Andersen first joined Cheetahs late in 2000 on loan from Coventry and became an instant favourite among the fans.

His return for a full season last year showed that he is still a rider of the highest calibre.

He will step into the second heat-leader role as the Cheetahs aim to retain the Elite League title.

Promoter Vanessa Purchase is pleased to have completed the team.

She said: "It is never easy putting together a team, especially when you are the current champions, but I am convinced that we can retain our title for a second year with the team we have put together.

"Brian has an average of 7.19 and brings the average of the team to 44.37, just under the 45 point limit for the Elite League."

It means Oxford make just one change from last year's winning set-up, with Todd Wiltshire unluckily having to step down because of the limit on Grand Prix riders.

Mark Lemon is the only new face and with him starting at reserve, he could turn out to be Cheetahs' trump card.

The club have set Wednesday, March 13 as their press and practice day and aim to kick-start the season two days later on March 15.

The press day will be followed by a meet-the-riders session in the evening.

Season tickets are also still available, details on 01235 763559.
