A pilot scheme in east Oxford is seeking volunteers to help the city council promote walking as a fun, safe and entertaining form of exercise.
The volunteers will be given free training, including a first aid course, to help them lead groups of walkers on short walks around east Oxford.
Plans are also under way to include public displays of art on the walks.
The council is working with the east Oxford arts agency Fusion to get works of art designed and built by walkers and local residents with the help of a professional artist.
Once trained, walk leaders will work in teams to encourage and support groups of people who are walking in order to improve their health and fitness. Leaders will be provided with high-visibility clothing, have their expenses paid, and will be able to attend regular social and training events.
Nik Earl, Active Communities Partnership manager, said: "Walk leaders don't need to have had any previous experience or a high degree of fitness.
"An interest in walking or east Oxford and an approachable personality are much more important.
"We are particularly keen to attract people from ethnic minorities and older people."
Training for volunteers, including a free lunch and refreshments, takes place on Sunday, February 10, at The Asian Cultural Centre, Manzil Way.
