Wallingford Town Council is set to spend £40,000 on an unsafe stone wall which has kept an important walkway closed for four years.
The council said work should start as soon as possible on Castle Lane wall, which is in a bad state of repair.
Town clerk Andrew Rogers said the council had accumulated £20,000 towards the work. More than £30,000 has already been spent on one stretch of the wall.
Mayor Theresa Jordan said: "This problem has gone on and on. The public wants the path opened again and so do we."
The path runs between the Castle grounds and Castle gardens, which are popular with residents and visitors.
