Councillors have rejected a proposal to give the Ladygrove area in Didcot its own fitness centre.
South Oxfordshire District Council's western area planning committee turned down a bid to get one on the former surgery site at Ladygrove Neighbourhood Centre.
They followed government advice which says fitness and leisure centres should be in town centres and easily accessible by public transport or walking. Out-of-town centres should be contemplated only if a lot of market research has identified a need for them.
The committee felt there was no evidence the centre was needed.
