A bill for road closure signs for a village Golden Jubilee street party is to be reduced.

Residents planning the party outside the Red Lion pub in Main Street, Wendlebury, on June 3, were dismayed when contractors quoted them £2,000.

Parish council chairman Jane Burrett, said: "We were absolutely stunned to be asked to pay £2,000 for the signs and putting them out and taking them away afterwards. We want to close a small section of the road for five hours for the party."

The villagers' problem was taken up by county council chairman Charles Shouler, as the quote came from Isis Accord, the company that has the county council contract for road maintenance. Mr Shouler, whose ward includes the village, said: "It is an unacceptable amount of money to ask a village to pay for its Jubilee party."

Negotiations between the organisers and Isis Accord are continuing.

The county council has agreed to reduce the number of road closures signs, cutting the bill. The council is paying the administration costs, but expects communities to pay for the signs themselves.

Mr Shouler said: "It could be argued that the party could be held in a side road, but I can appreciate that the villagers wanted the party to be seen as something for everyone. If it was in a residential road, the party might be seen as just for one group of residents."
