A consortium of landowners has promised to provide a park-and-ride site on the edge of Witney if they get permission to build 500 new homes to the east of the town.

The consortium has earmarked a third possible site for development in the town between Oxford Hill and Woodstock Road.

West Oxfordshire District Council would prefer to see the next phase of Witney's expansion to be to the west, with about 800 homes on land between Deer Park Road and Downs Road in Curbridge.

Another consortium of builders, led by Bryant Homes and David Wilson Estates, recently unveiled plans to build up to 850 houses on land north of the town, between Woodstock Road and Hailey Road. They have promised to provide a West End link road. The East Witney Consortium is offering to provide a park-and-ride site next to the A40, which would link with bus services to Oxford. The plans were unveiled at a three-day public exhibition in the Corn Exchange.

Spokesman James Mawle said: "Witney should be worried about proposals for hundreds of new homes. More houses have to be built, but not at the cost of a huge greenfield site on the wrong side of town."

Tony Edwards, of AB Edwards & Co, is pictured showing Witney resident Betty Sowerby some of the plans.
