A new Cycling academy is launched in Abingdon this evening in a drive to uncover Olympic medal winners of the future.

And on Saturday at Tilsley Park, there is the first of six cycle challenges taking place in the county during the coming months.

The new cycling academy and national cycling competition are part of a nationwide campaign being run by British Cycling to exploit the growing popularity of the sport. It follows Britain's gold and silver medals in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

Masterminding the programmes in Oxfordshire is cycling coach Robin Akers, 45, from Charlbury who is employed by British Cycling funded by Sport England, the National Lottery and with support from cycle manufacturer Raleigh.

He works in close co-operation with three district councils in the county organising the ten-week courses.

Tilsley Park in Abingdon is home to one of the four academies in Oxfordshire. Others are to be established in Witney, Crowmarsh, near Wallingford, and Banbury.
