An Abingdon man who had been on an all-afternoon drinking binge died after running into the path of a car on the A34, an inquest heard.

Peter Lowe, 28, of Gainsborough Green, Abingdon, died after he was hit by a silver Ford Escort on the southbound carriageway, near Chilton, on October 13 last year.

He was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Dr David Davies, a consultant pathologist at the JR, said Mr Lowe died from multiple injuries.

He said Mr Lowe's blood alcohol level was more than three times over the legal driving limit.

Jeremy Routledge, of School Close, Steventon, said he and Mr Lowe had drunk around nine pints in various pubs that after- noon.

The two men were travelling south along the A34 in a blue Ford escort van, when they decided to pull up and abandon the vehicle because Mr Routledge was convinced they had hit something.

The driver of the silver Ford Escort, Simon Andrews, said: "I saw an Escort which looked like it had been abandoned on the hard shoulder. I had literally just got past the vehicle when I saw someone run into the path of my car."

Coroner Nicholas Gardiner recorded a verdict of accidental death.
