The Oxfordshire Befriending Network charity is appealing for volunteers to help support terminally ill patients.

The charity based in Jericho, Oxford, brings people with life-threatening illnesses together with volunteer befrienders to provide support. It is celebrating after being awarded £263,000 by the National Lottery Community Fund.

The network has 30 active partnerships in the county, but many other terminally ill patients are on the waiting list, and volunteer befrienders are needed. Project co-ordinator Catherine Grundy said: "The new money means we will be able to expand our service to help more seriously ill people and their families.

"Each befriending partnership is unique. It can mean anything from helping with the shopping, a heart-to-heart over a cup of tea, or making plans for an outing."

Volunteers do not need to have qualifications, but are asked to be caring and must have a few hours a week to spare. Training is given.
