Abingdon ABC youngsters Dominic Ponting and Scott Southey suffered the disappointment of points defeats at the club's final show of the season.

Ponting rallied strongly on the counterattack in the final round, but it wasn't enough to erode the early lead of Hanwell rival John Reilly, who took a split decision.

And it was a similar story for Southey, who attempted to come from behind in his encounter with Heartlands rival Alex Higgins.

Higgins had been on cue from the bell, proving more productive in the opener before the pair cancelled each other out in the second round.

Southey made a valiant bid in the final session, but it proved insufficient to sway the judges and he lost on points.

The show was dedicated to John Joyce, the club's former matchmaker, who passed away aged 70, after a long illness, on March 15.

He had been a stalwart since the club was founded and, rather appropriately, his ashes will be placed in the foundation when construction work gets under way on the new gym.

John's family had requested that memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, be made to help fund the project and this gesture raised around £1,000.

A minute's silence was observed in his memory after a warm and moving tribute to him was made by Abingdon Town ABC chairman Nigel James.

When completed, the new building will be called the John Joyce Gymnasium.
