The Oxford Mail will be able to produce better quality newspapers after its parent company was given permission to build a new £20m press hall.
The hall will be built at the Mail offices in Osney Mead, Oxford, after the city council's Central, South and West Area Committee last night gave Newsquest (Oxfordshire) permission for the development.
The new printing press will allow faster production and increase the quality of type and colour in the Oxford Mail.
The Mail and a series of other papers, including The Oxford Times, are printed at the Osney Mead site.
Shamus Donald, managing director of Newsquest (Oxfordshire), welcomed the decision. He said: "This has given us the opportunity to really secure and develop our business and newspapers for Oxford and Oxfordshire."
Planners decided that the new, 19.75m high building would not obstruct views of the city from Raleigh Park and Boars Hill, and the impact on the floodplain would be offset by a flood compensation scheme.
Councillors asked that landscaping at the site be improved and recommended that a £5,000 contribution towards improving pedestrian and cycle links be used to improve a lane opposite the site.
