A school has won a long-running campaign to reduce speeding and improve road safety outside its gates.
Road calming measures and a new crossing have been installed outside John Mason School, in Wootton Road, Abingdon.
The school's crossing patrol warden retired two years ago. Oxfordshire County Council was unable to find a replacement and concern grew over safety on the busy road.
Headteacher Jeremy Cunningham said: "We were very worried there might be an accident and we trained our Students to make a 200-metre detour to a pelican crossing.
"Our student council pressed us to campaign for safety measures to reduce traffic speeds. Now the chances of a fatal or serious injury accident are much reduced."
Student council chairman Tim Snowball said: "I hope the new measures will improve safety for students. For a long time there has been a demand for better crossing facilities outside the school." The next stage of the school's travel plan is to replace old cycle sheds.
More than £10,000 has been raised but a further £10,000 is needed.
Mr Cunningham said: "The student council has put on rock concerts and the parents' association has run a raffle and other fundraising events.
"Students are learning that they can have an impact on their own lives by taking action and raising funds."
