Volunteers are needed to take terminally-ill patients on days out or to hospital appointments.

Sobell House hospice, based at the Churchill Hospital, in Headington, Oxford, is searching for motorists who can help its patients. About 10 drivers are needed every day, to transport people to the shops, on days out, or to outpatient appointments.

They also take essential medical equipment to patients living at home.

Hilary Lloyd, the hospice's voluntary services manager, said: "Volunteers are an essential part of the hospice team and offer help in all areas of the house.

"Many of our current volunteer drivers find their role extremely rewarding and have been driving for many years."

Most motorists who offer help work for three to four hours at a time on between one and four days a week. They are expected to use their own cars and can claim money back for petrol costs.

Sobell House also has a vehicle which has been adapted to carry a wheelchair and drivers can be trained to use it.

Full support and training is given to all volunteers joining the hospice.
