A project set up to steer young people away from car crime is celebrating its 10th birthday.

MP Andrew Smith with Lee Newton, 17 Trax, the Oxfordshire Motor Project, was set up a decade ago to combat car crime and anti-social behaviour.

It has worked with some of the county's most difficult young people. An anti-social obsession with cars has been turned into something positive for many of them, by going on courses at the centre.

On Friday, community leaders gathered at Trax's base in Osney Mead, Oxford, for a celebration. Guests included Gill Sanders, the Lord Mayor of Oxford, the Oxford East MP Andrew Smith, Oxford Mail editor Jim McClure, Unipart chief executive John Neil and the High Sheriff of Oxfordshire, Brigadier Nigel Mogg.

Project manager Andy Fellows said: "I think Trax's achievement is outstanding.

"We can't be successful with everybody, but so far we have worked with 2,500 young people and 120 are in high-profile jobs and training."

Brig Mogg said: "It's going from strength to strength and needs our continued support."
