Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police Peter Neyroud tested Oxford police's new fingerprinting machine on a visit to the city.
He later went on patrol with the city centre beat.
He described Livescan, which digitally photographs a suspect's fingers, as a major step forward. The system uses a database to tell within minutes if they are wanted anywhere in Britain.
