A pub will get an official seal of approval when it re-opens.
Wallingford mayor Nigel Moor wants fellow town councillors to support it by going there for a drink.
The council objected when Greene King, the owners of the Royal Standard, in St Mary's Street, tried to change its name to The Old Father Thames. After protests, Greene King backed down, but said there would still be a change of name to go with a change of image.
Council and brewers compromised and agreed the name The Royal. Mr Moor said: "We were delighted that a reasonable compromise was reached amicably. We wish the pub well."
Councillors agreed to support the pub and brewery by going for a drink.
