A bank manager who stole £156,000 by approving dozens of loans for himself has been jailed for two years.

Timothy Smith, 30, of Windrush Way, Witney, sobbed as a court was told he set up 42 bogus accounts at the Barclays Bank he ran.

The court heard he then spent the money on an "extravagant lifestyle" which included holidays to America.

He was found out when colleagues at the bank in Swanage, Dorset, spotted irregularities in loan application forms.

Smith confessed to having taken the cash out of revenge to the bank for "isolating" him when he was made manager.

Michael Mackey, prosecuting, said: "Smith had worked for Barclays for a number of years and was transferred to Swanage in 2000.

"He went about setting up 42 fictitious accounts in the names of fictitious people with fictitious jobs."

Smith, who offered to pay back the money, admitted three counts of making a false instrument and three of using a false instrument.

He asked for 78 other offences to be taken into consideration when he appeared at Dorchester Crown Court.
