Police cadets from four forces have raised £1,000 for a Chipping Norton school that cares for children with disabilities.

The money will help provide a special bed at Penhurst NCH School for a pupil who has a rare epilepsy-related illness.

The headteacher, Richard Aird, said: "The donation was a complete surprise to us, but very welcome."

The 54 cadets, including nearly 20 from Thames Valley Police, were on a 15-week training course at the fire service college in Moreton in Marsh.

The trainees used their free time to organise fundraising events, including a sports day, disco, and karaoke.

Mr Aird said: "I went to the passing out parade last week and explained to the cadets that disabled children from their areas attend Penhurst."

He added: "I must pay tribute to the cadets. They were on an intensive training course but found time to think about disabled children."

Insp Ian Mallinson, police training manager at the college, said: "All the cadets who pass through the college are invited to become involved with the local community. We were aware of Penhurst because our previous training centre was at Heythrop, close to Chipping Norton."

The school will feature in a BBC Panorama documentary on November 17.
