Medieval drama will be re-enacted in December as the Christmas story is retold in Wantage Parish Church.

The choir has teamed up with local theatre group the Domino Players to perform carols and seasonal mystery plays from the 15th century, when the church was built.

The obscure language has been edited by David Richardson, who said the plays had a beauty and wisdom of their own.

"They tell us not only about how our ancestors viewed the Christmas story, but also about the lives of English people at the time. For example, the shepherds in the plays complain bitterly about being exploited by the landed gentry.

"And if you want to get an idea of the original audience, look up at the medieval sculptures in the church roof, many of which are portraits of ordinary local people from the 15th century."

Music and Mysteries will be performed by candlelight in the church at 7.30pm on Saturday, December 7.

Tickets priced £5 are available from the Vale and Downland Museum in Church Street, Wantage.
