Residents have forced Oxford Brookes University to reduce the size of a new student accommodation complex.

The university will withdraw plans submitted to the city council for a fourth storey at its controversial halls of residence development in Marston Road, Oxford, to avoid further conflict.

Residents complained that the size of the halls would be intrusive and obstruct views of the Oxford skyline. The extra storey would have increased the number of bedsits by 84. The total number is still likely to be 737.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Graham Upton said: "It is apparent that there are reservations among the local residents, some of which appear to be shared by the council's planning officers."

But Brookes is to press ahead with plans for three extra pavilions to increase the number of students housed in the halls by 72.

Marilyn Cox, of the Jack Straw's Lane Association, welcomed the decision not to build an extra storey, but said: "We remain concerned about the cumulative effect of the extensive development that is taking place."
