Taking its cue from Harry Potter, the theme of this year's Abingdon Extravaganza will be witches and wizards.

Mayor Audrey Tamplin will turn on the town's Christmas lights on November 26, at 6.45pm.

The event is a joint venture between the town council and the Abingdon on Thames Chamber of Commerce.

Mrs Tamplin said: "The council and the chamber are very appreciative of the sponsorship that's been received to make the Christmas lights an attractive main feature. It should be a great night out for all the family."

The chamber president Howard Aldridge added: "We are looking forward to another spectacular evening for everyone. We would like to thank all of those shops and local businesses that have helped fund the event because without their help the extravaganza would not be possible."

The event starts at 5.30pm and among the entertainments will be a fun fair, face painting, street entertainers and a snow machine. Merlin the Magician will be this year's special guest.

Staff at many of the town's shops will be dressed up to match the theme and the mayor will judge the best entry.

The evening will finish with a spectacular fireworks display.
