The Wimbledon train is coming to Wallingford on Saturday - as AFC Wallingford prepare for biggest game in their short history in the Combined Counties League.

A typical crowd scene at an AFC Wimbledon game this season Wallingford, the defending league champions, host newly-formed AFC Wimbledon at the Hithercroft, where a record crowd is already guaranteed.

AFC Wimbledon hit the national headlines after a group of supporters and officials from Wimbledon FC, broke away from the Division 1 club to form a new team, following the decision to relocate to Milton Keynes.

And since their formation, they have been attracting massive gates both home and away, averaging nearly 4,000 at home, while boosting gates of all the other Combined Counties League sides 20 times over.

Wimbledon Supporters' Club have hired a stretch of railway line from Cholsey to Wallingford to get fans to the ground.

"There used to be a main line from Wallingford to London, so there there is still a stretch of track between Cholsey Station and Wallingford," explained AFC Wallingford chairman Lindsay Townsend.

"The Wimbledon club have hired it for the day, and most of their supporters will catch the train from Paddington to Cholsey, then hop on another train from Cholsey into Wallingford."

And there will be added spice to the clash, with Wimbledon just one place below Wallingford in the Premier Division table.

The match has been made all-ticket Townsend said it's going to be a massive game for the club.

"I have been in touch with Wimbledon, and we let them have 2,000 tickets," he said.

"They've told me they expect to sell all of them, but there has also been a lot of interest from the people of Wallingford, so the crowd will definitely be over 2,000."

With the club restricting the ground's capacity to 2,400, Townsend knows that Wallingford's supporters will be greatly outnumbered.

"It's going to be like an away game because of the number of supporters they bring, but we have had a great season so far, and it's an important match."

With record gate receipts assured, Townsend is urging supporters to arrive early, but only if they have a ticket. It's an all-ticket match.

"We have had to lay on extra security staff, emergency services and provide more car-parking space," he said.

"The rugby and hockey matches scheduled for the complex have been postponed, so everything is ready for Saturday."

There are still a few tickets available, but it is close to a sell-out.
