Garry Parker is hoping to bring his experience as a winner in football's top flight to help Abingdon Town climb the non-League ladder.

The 37-year-old midfielder, who enjoyed a highly successful career with Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Leicester City, scored with a trademark free-kick on his debut for Town as they won 5-3 at Ware in Ryman League Division 2 on Saturday.

He has signed as a player for Town after his friend Gordon Geary, whom he had been playing under at Kidlington Old Boys, was offered the job of assistant manager at Abingdon by new boss Pete Lamont.

Parker said: "I have gone there with Gordon and we looked at the league position and my aim is to get Abingdon promoted into the next league.

"Any club that I have been at I have always wanted to win things.

"I have left Kidlington Old Boys at the top of the senior league and we want to see if we can put Abingdon in the next division or win a cup.

"I don't want to be second best. I want to win every game I can play in."

Parker, who lives at Kidlington, played professional football for 17 seasons, during which time he made 565 first-team appearances and scored 73 goals.
