Residents have said no to plans for up to 2,500 new homes on the former airfield in Grove.

Grove Parish Council will officially oppose the proposals following objections raised at a public meeting.

The objection, which won unanimous, cross-party support, follows public consultation over the proposals contained in the draft local plan for 2011 issued by the Vale of White Horse District Council.

Fourteen members of the public attended the special parish council meeting, during which members agreed that the road and public transport system was inadequate and would be unable to support the development.

Parish council chairman Frank Parnell said one of the main roads out of the village was already a failed road by county council standards as it was in such a state of disrepair. The draft local plan proposes 750 houses on the site between 2006 and 2011 rising to 2,500 by 2021.

The parish council estimates the development would increase the village population by 75 per cent, making it second in size only to Abingdon in the Vale of White Horse district. It will send its final recommendations to the district council after an exhibition on the local plan in Old Mill Hall, Grove, which runs until Saturday.

A second motion agreed by councillors at the meeting demands access roads and a full infrastructure plan before building if the development goes ahead.
