Sports Minister Richard Caborn has been invited to visit Banbury Cricket Club in the light of an inquiry by the Charity Commission.
The commission is investigating the way the cricket club is run, and has said its ground must be opened to the public as a recreation field. Following an inquiry into Banbury Rugby Club's home, Bodicote Park, the commission ruled the charitable trust that ran the site had broken charity guidelines.
Single sport clubs are not entitled to charitable status, and Banbury MP Tony Baldry wants this changed.
Banbury Cricket Club is said to be breaking the rules by not allowing other recreational activities, including dog walking, to take place on its ground.
Mr Baldry said: "I think ministers should learn lessons over their handling of Bodicote Park to stop exactly the same thing happening to the cricket club."
Mr Caborn supported a change in the law. "I hope that more clubs will apply for and get charitable status.
He added that it was an issue that the Charity Commission was now looking at.
