The closure of the Oxford Pensioners' Club will come as a devastating blow to many elderly people.
Liz and Fred Ingram will feel particularly sad about the decision. They have run the club for 31 years, providing daily activities for hundreds of pensioners.
Both deserve our praise for their dedicated work.
For many lonely people, a trip to the club was the highlight of their week.
The end has come because appeals for money to pay bills and for helpers to share some of the workload have failed to generate support.
Sadly, such apathy is symptomatic of many clubs and societies these days.
People are happy to sit back and enjoy activities, but shy away when it comes to taking responsibility.
What the Pensioners' Club needed were a few younger people to ease the burden on Mr and Mrs Ingram. Even the offer of payment had no effect.
But all may not be lost.
Despite being 91, Mr Ingram is working with Oxford City Council to try to open another club for the elderly.
We wish them well.
