A pub darts marathon has given a £3,000 boost to the special baby care unit at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital.

Thirty regulars, including 70-year-old player Dot Lister and Ruth Stone, 69, played in a 12-hour sponsored darts marathon, which was held at the Cross Keys Pub in Ock Street, Abingdon.

A special presentation cheque was handed to representatives from the special care baby unit appeal on Friday.

Landlord Doug Eccles said: "It was a fantastic marathon. Everyone worked so hard and I was very proud when the total was announced.

"Everyone entered into the spirit of the event and some of our other regulars shaved their heads to raise money."

Mr Eccles and his wife Christine chose to support the special care baby unit because three members of Mrs Eccles's family received treatment there for their babies.

She said: "We have a special affinity with the care unit, so it was decided to support it.

"It's such a valuable facility and needs all the help it can get to continue it's vital work.

"I would like to thank all those customers who worked so hard in the marathon.

"It was exhausting but we all had a great time."
