Phil Gormley, the superintendent in charge of South Oxfordshire's police until February, has been appointed as a commander with the Metropolitan Police.
Mr Gormley joined Thames Valley Police in 1985, aged 22.
Recently he helped develop the force's strategy on the new Airwave radio system, and changes to the way the police handle calls using non-emergency call centres.
